Topiary Hybrid Tutorial

I have been working on this hybrid project for more than a week now so I am excited that it is finally done and I can show it off!

I saw the project in the April 2010 issue of Scrapbooks Etc HERE, but I thought I’d recreate the instructions for you since I don’t know how long that link will be available and with my hybrid modifications :)

Supplies I used: (not all shown- I forgot to take the picture before I started)

*Digital kit - I used Pink Lemonade by Marni Designs - I printed papers on 10 sheets double sided (regular copy paper) and ended up with 4 partial sheets leftover. You could do this project with 7 double sided sheets, and elements printed on cardstock.

*6” terra cotta pot

*6”round foam ball

*foam block for inside pot

*5/16x12” dowel rod

*2 sizes of heart punches

*circle punch or template and cutter

*corsage pins - I got a pack of 48 for $1.99 at Michaels and had quite a few leftover

*buttons - I found this great “Bucket of Buttons” for $5.99 at Michaels

*Tacky Glue (or other liquid glue)

*hot glue

*acrylic paints

*fake moss stuff

To assemble the flowers:

For each flower, punch one circle and 6 hearts.

Fold each heart in half

And in half again, keeping the folds close to the point.

Put a dot of glue in the center of the square and attach the points. It is easiest to put 2 across from each other first and then fill in the sides.

They do not have to be exact - I prefer a more homemade uneven-ness :) And we’re going to be covering the centers with buttons anyway.

After the glue is dry, you can push the petals down a bit to cover the circle. I found that if I messed them too much while the glue was wet, they just pushed out of place.

Make some big flowers and more small ones. They look really cute with small petals layered on top of larger ones too!

Put a button on a corsage pin and push through the center.

To assemble the topiary:

Put the foam block in the pot, the dowel in the foam and the foam ball on the rod. Hot glue in place.

Insert the pinned flowers into the foam ball. As you maybe can see, I had trouble getting the flowers arranged perfectly to cover all of the ball. I used leaves, swirls and flourishes from the kit, as well as paper strips curled around a pencil to fill in some of the more bare spots, but again it’s more of that homemade imperfection ;)

I painted the pot and dowel rod. I also used a digital ribbon to embellish the rim of the pot.

I had a lot of fun putting this together and it definitely cheers up my desk, but it was time consuming. I found that I could put together about 7 flowers in an hour. I made 10 large and layered flowers and 14 small ones. Factor in drying time, painting, and arranging - I must have rearranged half a dozen times trying to get the best coverage lol, and cutting and attaching the extra elements… it is a pretty big project. But I love it so it was definitely worth it! And besides all that, it matches the bowl you see next to it that Tyler made me a couple months ago! :)

And speaking of Tyler, he had his best friend’s birthday party on Friday, so I made this card for him to give:

I used Little Buddy by Marni Designs. I double printed the kraft stars and attached them with pop dots to give it some dimension and then I made an envelope to attach to the inside for him to put the gift card in!

A New Kit!

It's almost Father's Day! Have any plans? So far we have none! I don't even know what my children are getting their dad for Father's Day. I better start thinking about that. What a great gift to put together a mini album of your kids with their dad and give him that for Father's Day! I've got a wonderful kit to show you that would work perfect for Dad pictures.

Marti Scraps and Jacabean Designs have teamed up to create a kit called "One Cool Dad." The colors are so fun and masculine and the patterns are very cool! I had a great time scrapping with this kit. Let me show you what the kit looks like.

I have totally been into hybrid projects lately! I am really bad about getting my layouts printed but I love having something to show off :) Officially, Ramona is our Hybrid Supreme, but I don’t think she’ll mind if I show off some of the great projects in our Hybrid Gallery!

How ever you celebrate I hope it is a great weekend for you. We usually attend a memorial for the veterans here. I find it to be a very powerful weekend emotionally. I want to thank all the people that risk their lives every day so that we may all live safer. Please remember to keep them in your thoughts and prayers not just today but every day of the year.

Today is a very special day in my family. It's my oldest daughter's birthday! It's hard to believe 11 years ago this morning I was just hanging out at home having a typical Saturday and by the time I went to sleep that night, I was a mom. It's amazing how much one tiny person can completely change your life. Now that sweet girl has 4 little sisters who are her best friends, and our family is full of love and laughter... and plenty of drama, too.

Speaking of birthdays and sisters, Mara of Marti Scraps just released this gorgeous new kit that she made in honor of her sister's birthday which is only a few days away.

Naturally I had to make a sister page with Connie Bonnie. These are my two oldest, my little birthday girl and the first one who made her a sister. These two are roommates, playmates, and best friends in every way.

Hybrid--Getting Started

Wow, I haven't written on this blog in forever! In the beginning, I started this blog as I was beginning my design journey! Over time, things grew and changed and this became the Supreme's Blog. Now that I am a Supreme, I'm excited to post here again. I am the first official Hybrid Supreme and I'm excited to teach all things hybrid!

Today, we're just going to get things started! I'm going to talk about tools you might need and some tips that I have found to be helpful. The next time I post, I will have a fun project to show and share how I did it. So, shall we get started?

Hybrid simply means half or part digital and half or part paper scrapping. Before I started scrapping digitally, I scrapped with paper for years! One thing that has always appealed to me is hybrid because I can mix it up. When I used to scrap with only paper, I would get frustrated with my handwriting or seeing an element I really liked but didn't know how to duplicate. Also, if I decided to make an album for my mom and mil, I had to do the work twice! Now, the work is much easier and I get to just top it off with a few fun elements.

Basic Tools:
scissors
glue or adhesive
paper cutter

Extra's that help:
ribbon
chipboard
glue dots

Printing options:
home printer
anyplace that you would have photo's printed
Kinko's, Alphagraphics, paper printing place

Projects:
The project options are endless. But here are just a few:
layout

Over the coming weeks, I will explore these different options and many more. Sometimes I may provide a template, but most often I will give ideas and places where you can find what you'll need! If you've never tried hybrid, but wanted to, now is the chance to jump in and try it! You'll be amazed at how satisfying it can be!

Mud Pie

Hey, howdy, hey! Melanie here. Sorry I'm posting so, so late today. It wasn't supposed to be such a crazy day, but for some reason it ended up being insane. I'm sure you've all had days like that. So even though the day is almost over, I had to make sure I showed you this fabulous new kit from Jacabean Designs. Have you seen it yet?

It's fabulous! And such a fun name! Mud Pie. Makes me want to go outside and get dirty with the kids. Even though it's a boy kit and I have a family full of girls, I just couldn't resist playing with it.

That little cutie of mine had a dental procedure today that turned into more of a mini surgery than I was expecting. I feel horrible that I didn't prepare her better for what was going to happen. She handled it all like a champ, though, and she gets to go out for ice cream with Dad tonight! Not such a bad way to end a day. So if you'd also like a great ending to your possibly not so great day, head over to the store and enjoy a Mud Pie from Jacabean Designs. It's the perfect pick-me-up. And so is a freebie! Hi there! I'm one of the new Brownie Supremes! My name is Becky and I look forward to showing you some of the wonderful kits that are in the Brownie Scraps store. There are so many of them! The first kit that I worked with was Flutterbye Faery Designs' newest kit called "SWAK." Now I bet you are wondering what SWAK stands for! I was too! It stands for Sealed With A Kiss. Now that might give you a better idea of what is in this kit. The kit has some vintage elements and papers and few items that have postmarks and things like that on it. Take a look at this beauty.
This layout that I made came together so easily! I just loved the frame and instead of using two pictures I kept one side for journaling. I really like how that looks! Plus I only had 1 picture I wanted to use. :) Head on over to Brownie Scraps to pick up SWAK! And while you're at Flutterbye Faery Designs' store take a look at and pick up Giggles. This is such a fun girly kit. I am in love with really girl kits! Take a look at this kit full of pinks and greens. I made a layout using this kit for the Cinnamon Bear and Chocolate Challenge. In this challenge you are given either 2 or 3 layouts and you need to combine them into one. I LOVE this challenge because I love to scraplift layouts and this one challenges me to scraplift several layouts into one. Here's what I came up with. To see the other layouts, click the link above. Mud Puddles and Challenges

Wow I cannot believe we are already into May! Did you have a great time catching the sale for National Scrapbook Day? I am betting you have a ton of new stuff that you would Love to play with. The best part about the beginning of the month is (well ok there are a few awesome things like the introduction of the New Collab Kit that Christina showed you yesterday to a whole line up of new Challenges available in the Brownie Scrap Forums. Guess what . . . those kits are the PERFECT excuse for you to play with your new kits!

I am hosting the Cherry on Top Challenge this month and I have to say I am pretty excited about it. I have provided you with twelve different quotes about beginning(s) all you have to do is scrap a layout using one of those quotes!

I used this as an opportunity to scrap Bear playing in a HUGE mud puddle that we had in our yard this spring. He Absolutely LOVES going to the lake and this puddle was big enough to count as one. I wasn’t to nuts about all the mud and dirt but he had a lot of fun. Plus I knew the puddle would only last a few days and by the time he got done running around it was nearly gone already! Now that same spot is full of green grass that is in need of being mowed and the bushes are starting to get fresh leaves. Nothing stays the same for long does it? Here is the layout I did for the challenge:

Please excuse me if I happen to not make much sense right now or have misspellings, lol I have been drinking some pina coladas and getting ready to have some champagne.. :) Don and I are starting home tonight and just playing it safe :) So today the January Collab at Brownie Scraps comes out and it's adorable!! Snowmen Fall Unassembled

This past weekend my boys finally got an opportunity to play outside in the snow. They both love playing outside! My oldest likes to make snowmen and my middle son likes to knock them down. I guess it works for them...at least until the oldest gets fed up with it! ;)

Monthly Challenges at Brownie Scraps

Did you know that every month Brownie Scraps has lots of fun challenges that you can participate in? By participating in these fun challenges you can earn Brownie Points, and the more Brownie Points you earn the more you can save on a purchase in the store.

Each month I host the Color Challenge at Brownie Scraps. Usually the challenge involves scrapping a layout with a particular set of colors. This month I mixed it up a bit and let you chose the colors...but there's a catch...you have to scrap a holiday layout using non-traditional colors! Its quite a challenge but lots of fun!

Here is a Christmas layout I made using this month's collab kit, Christmas Wonder. Its a great Christmas kit full of non-traditional colors!
